Easy Shrinky Dinks Glass Charms
Who remembers Shrinky Dinks? I LOVE THEM! And I love making things with them. A touch of nostalgia coupled with my littles watching in amazement as their colored creations turn into durable little charms is pretty awesome.
My friend Laura Kelly draws the cutest things! I cannot draw, but I sure can trace. I used her free candy corn printable to make these adorable glass charms! Not a drinker? Doesn't matter. They really can go on anything. Backpacks. Notebooks. Handmade Halloween cards. Those fun plastic “champagne” glasses that you can fill with sparkling juice to add a fun detail to your Halloween or Fall party! (I'm sort of a DIY charms fan. Sort of LOVE them.)
First, go download the printable from Me and My Inklings. Did I mention FREE? Bonus: There's also a boss recipe for candy corn treat bars. I KNOW.
Shrinky Dinks Frosted Ruff N' Ready Pack
Crayola 50ct Colored Pencils
Hole Punch (recommended 3/4″ but is workable with smaller – see below in instructions)
Scissors (Mine are from Ikea)
Wine Charm Rings
Beads of your choice. (Check them first to make sure they're sized to fit your charm rings)
Sheet of brown paper (I just cut a brown paper bag)
Potholder or oven mitt
First, trace the design on the SHINY side of the Shrinky Dink sheet with a black sharpie.
Flip the sheet over and do your coloring on the ROUGH side.
It's important to make sure you trace on the shiny side, color on the rough side, or your finished project may be less than completely awesome.
Cut around your shapes. I like to leave a little margin around the tracing line, but that's totally a personal preference. You also need to punch the holes prior to baking, because you cannot punch the finished ones. That may or may not be the voice of personal experience talking. The instructions on the Shrinky Dink package say to use a 3/4″ punch, however that is a HUGE punch I do not have. I used the 3/16″ hole on my Crop A Dile punch, and just overlapped three separate holes to make one larger one. It totally worked.
Place the brown paper bag you cut out into a large cookie sheet. Lay the Shrinky Dinks on the paper SHINY side down. Preheat oven to 375*F and when the oven is hot, pop the tray inside on the middle rack. WATCH THEM CLOSELY, they shrink fast. It took my oven about 1:15 to fully shrink them. When you take them out, some are going to be curled up. Quickly remove the flat ones, and place the tray back in the oven. Close the door for about 10 seconds, then pull the oven rack out a few inches and use a potholder or oven mitt to press down on the curled ones while they're still on the hot tray. They'll start cooling before you can get them all smooshed, so just pull off the now-flattened ones, and close the oven door for another ten seconds. Repeat until all charms have been flattened.
String the beads and now-cooled charms through onto the wire rings – voila! The whole project takes less than 30 minutes, and I just love how they turned out!
